About ACCP

The American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), an international medical society, is the leading resource for improvement in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine worldwide. The ACCP promotes the prevention and treatment of chest diseases through leadership, education, research, and communication.

Each year, the ACCP holds its annual CHEST meeting. Recognized around the world as the authority in clinical chest medicine, CHEST features education opportunities in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine. The ACCP offers other continuing education courses throughout the year, including premier board review courses in pulmonary, critical care, sleep, and pediatric pulmonary medicine. A leader in simulation education, the ACCP often features cutting edge, hands-on simulation experiences during courses, so attendees can practice their skills and apply their knowledge in clinical situations. In addition, the ACCP publishes CHEST the essential resource for original research in pulmonology, critical care, sleep medicine, cardiorespiratory interactions, thoracic surgery, transplantation, airways disease, and more.

The ACCP has a long history of actively working to promote better health and patient care. In 1935, when it was founded, members educated physicians and the public about TB treatment and prevention while working to eradicate the disease. The ACCP was one of the first medical societies to warn of the dangers of cigarette smoking and was later instrumental in the passage of legislation related to smoking, including the smoking ban on airline flights. In 1996, the ACCP founded The CHEST Foundation, its philanthropic arm. The CHEST Foundation helps patients live and breathe easier through its work in four key areas: tobacco prevention, humanitarian service, clinical research, and critical care/end-of-life care. By giving life to projects in local communities and across the world, The CHEST Foundation enables the ACCP to realize its vision.
